The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course is an internationally recognized entry-level certification designed to prepare new divers with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for safe and enjoyable underwater exploration. Graduates are certified to dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters (60 feet) with a dive buddy, without direct supervision.

Prerequisites

To enroll in the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course, participants must:

• Minimum Age: 10 years old (minors require parental consent).
• Swimming Skills: Be able to swim 200 meters without equipment or 300 meters with mask, fins, and snorkel, and float or tread water for 10 minutes.
• Physical Health: Be in good health and complete a medical questionnaire. Physician approval may be required based on responses.

Course Structure

The course includes a combination of self-paced learning and in-water training:

1. Knowledge Development: Online or in-class study covering scuba theory, equipment use, safety, and dive planning.
2. Confined Water Sessions: Practice sessions in a pool or pool-like environment to learn and refine scuba skills.
3. Open Water Dives: A minimum of four open water dives to apply and demonstrate skills in real diving conditions.

Duration

The course is typically completed in 3 to 4 days, with flexible scheduling available through SDI's eLearning platform. Total time may vary based on student pace and local dive center logistics.

Certification Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants earn the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver certification, which allows them to:

• Dive to a depth of 18 meters (60 feet) with a certified buddy.
• Rent equipment and book recreational dives worldwide.
• Enroll in advanced and specialty scuba courses within the SDI system.
