Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor (OWSDI)

The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor (OWSDI) course is the core instructor-level certification that enables dive professionals to teach new divers. This program focuses on instructional techniques, standards and procedures, risk management, and how to deliver safe, engaging scuba education. Graduates are qualified to teach, evaluate, and certify SDI Open Water Scuba Divers and other entry-level courses.

Prerequisites

To enroll in the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor course, participants must:

  • Minimum Age: 18 years old.
  • Certification: Be a certified SDI Divemaster (or equivalent from a recognized agency).
  • Diving Experience: Have logged at least 100 dives.
  • First Aid Training: Hold current CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen Provider certifications (within the past 24 months).
  • Medical Clearance: Provide a physician-signed medical statement within the last 12 months, confirming fitness to dive.
  • Professional Preparation: Complete the SDI Instructor Development Course (IDC) and successfully pass the Instructor Evaluation Course (IEC).

Course Structure

The SDI Instructor training includes academic development, teaching techniques, and evaluation standards:

  1. Instructor Development Course (IDC):

    • Learn how to organize and conduct SDI programs including Open Water Diver, Advanced Adventure, Rescue Diver, and specialties like Computer Nitrox.
    • Practice classroom, confined water, and open water teaching presentations.
    • Review standards, risk management, and student supervision.
  2. Instructor Evaluation Course (IEC):

    • A standardized evaluation conducted by an SDI Instructor Trainer or Course Director.
    • Includes written exams, confined water evaluations, and open water teaching demonstrations.

Duration

The full training typically spans 6–10 days, depending on the dive center and the candidate’s preparedness. The IDC may be completed in segments or as an internship. The IEC is a 2-day evaluation.

Certification Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants earn the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor certification, enabling them to:

  • Teach and certify students for SDI Open Water Diver, Advanced Adventure Diver, Rescue Diver, and certain specialties.
  • Conduct refresher programs and Scuba Discovery experiences.
  • Begin working professionally with dive centers, resorts, and training institutions worldwide.
