Divemaster (SDI)
The SDI Divemaster course is the first professional-level certification in the SDI system. It prepares experienced divers to take on leadership roles by developing their knowledge, rescue skills, and ability to supervise and assist with diving activities. Certified Divemasters can work with dive operations, assist instructors, and guide certified divers.
Prerequisites
To enroll in the SDI Divemaster course, participants must:
- Minimum Age: 18 years old.
- Certification: Hold SDI Rescue Diver certification (or equivalent).
- First Aid Training: Have a current CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (within the last 24 months).
- Diving Experience: Have logged at least 40 dives to begin the course and 60 dives to earn certification.
- Medical Clearance: Provide a medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months, stating fitness for diving.
Course Structure
The course combines academic learning, water skills development, and real-world leadership experience:
- Knowledge Development: Dive physics, physiology, equipment, dive planning, supervision, and risk management.
- Water Skills & Stamina Tests: Swimming evaluations, rescue scenarios, and problem-solving under stress.
- Practical Training:
- Assist with real courses under instructor supervision.
- Supervise and guide certified divers.
- Conduct SDI programs like Scuba Discovery and Refresher (when qualified).
- Dive Leadership Scenarios: Apply leadership skills in controlled and open water environments.
Duration
The course is typically completed over 2–4 weeks as a full-time program, or over several months as an internship. The timeline can vary depending on student readiness and dive center scheduling.
Certification Outcome
Upon successful completion, participants earn the SDI Divemaster certification, allowing them to:
- Supervise and guide certified divers.
- Assist SDI Instructors during training programs.
- Conduct selected SDI programs independently (e.g., Scuba Discovery, Refresher, Snorkeling).
- Begin the path to becoming an SDI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
