The SDI Advanced Diver certification is designed to elevate a diver’s experience and skill set beyond the entry-level. It recognizes divers who have completed a variety of specialty training and logged a significant amount of dive experience, making them more confident, capable, and prepared for diverse underwater environments.

Prerequisites

To qualify for the SDI Advanced Diver certification, participants must:

• Minimum Age: 18 years old (or 10–17 years old with parental consent).
• Certification: Hold an SDI Open Water Scuba Diver certification or equivalent.
• Diving Experience: Have logged at least 25 open water dives.

Certification Requirements

To earn the SDI Advanced Diver certification, divers must:

• Complete four SDI specialty courses, which may include:
  • Deep Diver
  • Navigation
  • Night/Limited Visibility
  • Wreck
  • Computer Nitrox
  • And others, depending on interest and availability
• Log a minimum of 25 total dives (including training dives from specialty courses).

Course Structure

There is no separate classroom course for SDI Advanced Diver. Instead, certification is achieved by:

1. Completing four SDI specialty courses, each with its own academic and in-water requirements.
2. Logging dives to meet or exceed the 25-dive threshold.

Duration

The duration depends on the specialties chosen and the diver’s schedule. Each specialty course typically takes 1–2 days, so the full path to Advanced Diver may span several weeks or be completed gradually over time.

Certification Outcome

Upon certification, SDI Advanced Divers are recognized as experienced and versatile divers who can:

• Plan and execute dives in a range of environments and conditions.
• Use specialty knowledge and equipment for deeper, more complex, or lower-visibility dives.
• Continue their education toward Rescue Diver, Divemaster, or other professional levels.
